---Glaucoma Medications (alphabetical order)

  • Alpha-Adrenergic Agonists (decrease the formation of aqueous humor in the eye and increase the steady flow of the aqueous humor out of the eye.)
        Alphagan (brimonidine .2% )
        Iopidine (apraclonidine .5%)
        Cosopt (dorzolamide + timolol)

  • Beta Blockers (Topical beta-blocker eye medications decrease the rate that the aqueous humor flows into the eye. Beta-blocker topical eye medications are often used as initial therapy for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma due to their effectiveness, side effect profile, and cost. Caution should be used in patients with lung diseases, such as asthma or emphysema because beta-blockers may worsen these types of diseases.)

    Betagan (levobunolol)

    Betimol (timolol hemihydrate)
        Betoptic (
    betaxolol hydrochloride)
        Betoptic S (betaxolol .25%)
        Ocupress (carteolol
    )

    OptiPranolol (metipranolol)
        Timoptic (timolol maleate)

  • Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors (available as a topical eye medication as well as tablets or capsules that are taken by mouth. These medications decrease the rate that the aqueous humor flows into the eye. It is thought that the topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor eye medications have fewer side effects than the tablets or capsules taken by mouth.)

    Azopt (brinzolamide 1%)
        Diamox (acetazolamide)
        Trusopt (dorzolamide)

  • Prostaglandin Analogues (newest medications to hit the market for the treatment of glaucoma; these medications increase the rate at which the aqueous fluid flows out of the eye.)
        Travatan (travoprost .004%)
        Lumigan (bimatoprost)
        Rescula (unoprostone)
        Xalatan (latanoprost)
