Segmented Contact Lenses
Q: What are Segmented
Contacts?
A: These are contact lenses that actually have a small
bifocal embedded into the
lens. They can be made with a bifocal(two
divisions) or a trifocal (three
divisions). They are available in soft
and gas permeable materials.
Q: These sound pretty complicated. Do they work?
A: They can be very successful if the lens centers properly
and proper movement
is obtained. The lens' segment needs to
be below the pupil center when you
are looking at distance. When you are
reading, the lower lid needs to push
the lens up into the pupil center.
Q: When are Segmented
Contacts used?
A: We tend to try a Simultaneous
Vision contact lens initially, especially if you
are experiencing presbyopia for the first time.
If the Simultaneous lenses
do not provide adequate vision, the next step
is a Seqmented Contact. These
lenses tend to be used more when presbyopia is
advanced.
