Simultaneous Vision Contact Lenses

Q: What are Simultaneous Vision Contacts?

A: Simultaneous Vision lenses allow both distant and near objects to be in focus at the same time. The design places near and distance vision correction in concentric rings on the lens. Related lens types include aspheric, in which the lens power changes gradually, from the center to the edge of the lens, and diffractive, which uses a series of grooves, cut into the back surface of the lens, to provide near vision correction.

Q: These sound pretty complicated.  Do they work?

A: They can be very successful if the lens centers properly and proper movement is obtained.  This style of bifocal is the most successful.  Rates of success are usually over 80% with properly selected patients.

Q: When are Simultaneous Vision Contacts used?

A: We tend to try a Simultaneous Vision contact lens initially, especially if you are experiencing presbyopia for the first time.   If the Simultaneous lenses do not provide adequate vision, the next step is a Segmented Bifocal lens.
