Sensory Cognitive Motor Assessment

What is a “Sensory Cognitive Motor Assessment”?
It is an assessment
that determines the underlying sensory cognitive motor problems which result in learning difficulties and inconsistencies.
Sensory cognitive motor problems include attention, auditory, visual and thinking deficits.  The assessment is nationally norm-referenced.  This means the results are compared to a national sampling of students which are the same age.  Deficits in these tests indicate a fundamental or foundational problem in learning.

your child's eyesWhat are the tests?
They are tests which check your child’s learning aptitude in several areas:

-Knowing the type, number and placement of component sounds within words

-Ability to remember information, whether it is heard or seen

-Tracking or scanning skill without losing place

-Sustained and Divided Attention ability when doing reading or writing tasks

-Speed of processing information

-Skill in using logic and reason abilities

-Ability to use and manipulate mental pictures for comprehension & understanding

These assessments are fun and challenging for most students.  They like them because we are finding out skill levels, not whether they “pass”.

Depending on symptoms, assessment areas include:

--Achievement Tests

  • Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE)

  • Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (KABC)

  • Test of Reading Comprehension-3 (TORC-3)

  • Tests of Academic Achievement Skills (TAAS)

  • Taylor Computer Placement Appraisal (CPA)

  • Slosson Oral Reading Test (SORT)

--Attention/Concentration Tests

  • Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA)

  • Interactive Metronome (IM) Long Form Test Battery

  • Connors Rating Scales (CRS)

the biggest concern--Auditory Information Processing Tests

--Visual Information Processing Tests

  • Learning Efficiency Test (LET II)

  • Developmental Test of Visual Perception (DTVP

  • Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (KABC

  • Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT)

  • Gardner Reversal Frequency Tests (RFT)

  • Primary Mental Abilities (PMA)- Perceptual Speed & Spatial Relations (PMA),

  • Test of Handwriting Skills (THS)

  • Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude (DTLA)

  • Structure of the Intellect (SOI)

  • Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS),

  • Test of NonVerbal Intelligence (TONI).

  • Test of Pictures, Forms, Letters, Numbers, Spatial Orientation (TPFLNSOSS)

  • Jordan Left Right Reversal Test (JLRRT)

  • Grooved Pegboard Test (Pegboard #32025))

  • Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration (VMI),

  • Test of Visual Analysis Skills (TVAS),

  • Test of Memory and Learning (TOMAL),

  • Visagraph Computerized Eye Movement Test (Visagraph),

  • NSUCO/Maples Oculomotor Test (Maples)

  • Developmental Eye Movement Test (DEM)

How long will this take?
This testing is usually complete in 3-4 hours.  Some children will take longer or shorter depending on age and ability.  We will schedule an additional session if needed.

What happens after the tests?
A comprehensive report (usually 15-20 pages long) of symptoms, testing results, learning styles and recommendations is produced.  Parents review the report at home and discussion occurs with the office.  A separate consultation, if needed, occurs with Dr. Mayer.  Test results and recommendations will be reviewed at that timeAny questions can be discussed personally with Dr. Mayer.
