Q&A with Dr. Mayer | Children Having Trouble At School
My child is having trouble reading. Could it be her vision?

It's a strong possibility. A lot of children between first and third grade have to develop a lot of skills - fast - to keep pace in the classroom. Ultimately, their brain and eyes need to team up well, combine letters into words with specific arrangements, and so on, and process it into a comprehensive picture. Any delays in a child's visual development could cause a child to have trouble reading, regardless of how much time and effort they may spend at trying to read.

My child has headaches when reading. Does he have a visual problem?

Headaches with reading are a strong indicator of a visual problem.

Other signs can include:

  • Child has tracking issues & loses their place
  • Skipping words or entire lines.
  • Inability to remember or understand what they read.

For a full list of symptoms, take our vision quiz online with your child!

Why should my child enroll in vision therapy?

Vision therapy is much like physical therapy in the sense that through this program a person develops the skills to improve their lives tremendously.

For example, if your child hates reading due to a vision problem, vision therapy helps them start to love it! If your child was never active at sports or felt he or she was never good enough, vision therapy can give them an added boost of confidence. Not only will a child start to learn better, perform better, and feel better, but they'll actually avoid suffering from headaches, eye strain, dyslexia, or double vision.

Even children with ADD/ADHD, Autism, or adults after a traumatic brain injury benefit from vision therapy because by training our visual skills, one of the essential parts of our lives can be improved.

As there are so many areas where healthy vision can make an incredible difference, one might almost respond by asking "why not"?
